LEDA On top of the World!

Paul Wilde, the CATS and Australia's World Champion, took out the road race at The World Masters Cycling Championships at an average of 42km/h in Class 6, 49-52 years, held in Austria, 25th August 2006.

He is one dedicated and focused individual and a true inspiration to all, especially to the young riders of today.Well done Paul!! Here's Pauls recap of the event:

"The week in St Johann (Austria) was like one big dream. Not only for the results but the whole atmosphere is excitement non stop.

After a rainy & cold start to the week we were greeted with a beautiful warm day. I was very nervous before the race, but once we started I was floating along.

Not knowing many of the riders was against me, but I did stay near the front of the race & followed one of the top German riders Vladimir Godfried. In this race you cannot afford to let any rider go up the road to far.

My usual tactics are to break away, but I have worked really hard on developing my sprint as I had noted in previous years there was usually a sprint.

There were many attacks the whole race & I decided for the last 20 k´s I would try & conserve energy if at all possible. With such a big bunch left in the last k´s (also some dangerous curves/ intersections in the last one km) it was essential to stay near the front easier said than done.

Even though I was 5th wheel before the last bend, the riders behind came around me because the speed was only 48 to 50 k´s. With about 500 metres to go I thought it was all over for me but as the peleton swept around the last sweeping bend they veered to the right. This left some open space (not much) on the left. My last chance to open up my sprint.A s I hugged the left hand gutter, I was still boxed in at the 250 mtrs. Then at last I squeezed through with about 150 mtrs to go, but with about 5 riders ahead of me. Robbie McEwen would have been proud of me the way I launched to the line passing the last rider with 1/2 a bike to spare.

All the problems I encountered in the sprint were blessings in disguise as every one else had started there sprint much earlier & were starting to wain in the last 50 mtrs. You can´t imagine the feeling as I crossed the line with no one in sight!!"

Great effort Paul !
